1. The issues: Mobile Security & Managing a Fleet of Personal Mobile Devices

The rapid proliferation of mobile devices such as Smartphones and tablets are proving to be a major challenge for banks and other companies involved in fields with restricted access to sensitive information. Not only are these mobile devices becoming more ubiquitous as communication devices, they are increasingly replacing PCs and laptops as the preferred working platform.

Furthermore, the security mechanisms provided by the device manufacturers have been woefully inadequate to protect against sophisticated hackers. As organizations start to deploy mobile applications to their workforce and to their clients, it is even more necessary to be able to manage company specific applications on a wide range of mobile devices. For security and IT managers, the issue centers on how to preserve the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive company data, while letting the business executives continue to work with the greatest flexibility, anywhere, anytime, on a device of their choice. Whatever solution is adopted, it needs to offer speed, ease of use, and complete protection from all threats such as loss, theft, leakage or hacking, all without impeding the work habits and efficiency of the user.

2. How Sense works

Sysmosoft® Sense aims to protect only the professional information managed by business applications. Because it does not manage or control the whole device, it is not considered a Mobile Device Management (MDM). Sense works by creating a secure environment, or 'sandbox', on the user's mobile device, from which the company's business applications can be safely opened and used. Sense is not intended for, and does not cover all the other applications on the device. Unlike with the heavy-handed approach of MDMs, Sense is less intrusive since it simply isolates the personal and the business environments, thereby letting the user keep his own habits on his personal applications.
Once the sandbox is open, the user can safely access the company's business applications available on Sense, and can work with sensitive company data. After completing the task or work, the user closes Sense and the information is then no longer accessible.

Sense works in conjunction with the firm's security and IT infrastructure, through a highly securitized authentication and controlled access communication channel. The company's IT department therefore controls the secure remote environment as well as the access to the sensitive data.

3. Sysmosoft's solution: Sense

Sysmosoft® Sense goes beyond the usual security mechanisms. In addition to using end-to-end data protection through FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic algorithms, and preserving access to information through strong authentication, Sysmosoft® Sense protects corporate data on your users' mobile devices. Critical information is maintained in a specific container, highly secured and fully controlled by your company. Once confined inside that 'secured environment', the data is submitted to the security policy defined by the company and is protected against loss, theft and confiscation of the Smartphone. Depending on the company's business needs, the Sense solution can be extended to its customers as well.
